As I was walking through Kelly Ingram Park, I thought about our conversation with Mr. Williams, who is the founder of the College Orientation Workshop(C.O.W.) program. During our talk with Mr. Williams, he acknowledged the fact that in the midst of all the atrocities and acts of terror, there are many good people who are battling the forces of evil. There are people who are doing everything in their power to make sure that others succeed; people who are genuinely trying to do the right things. Sometimes our situations get so ugly that we can’t see those good people in our life. Mr. Williams encouraged us to not allow our anger and frustration to blind us from seeing the goodness in those around us. It’s important for me to acknowledge those good people around me because it’s those people that me continue to hope for a better day. It’s those people that makes me want to be a part of the solution. Those good people make it possible for me to forgive others. Ultimately, those good people are the reason I look forward to tomorrow

You are so right, Wood-May, about the power you and your generation have to make the world better. Never underestimate the power of good, no matter how dark things seem. I am so glad you see this and I know you will bring your light wherever you go.

Wood-May: there are good people all around us all the time, so much so that we take them for granted. It is when we are confronted with the 'evil' that people do that we can more deeply appreciate the people in our lives who have done good. Every person has a context, and while that context should not be used as an excuse for their evil behavior, we who perhaps can see the bigger picture can begin to understand why they behave the way they do.
ReplyDeleteWoody, aren’t we lucky to have people like Mr. Williams in the world who can help us see the positive in things? Attitude in life has so much to do with how you get through it and the happiness you have. I hope his words will stay with you in the years ahead.
